jet lag woes, part deux

it's nice to be at home, and sleep in my own bed... if only i could sleep. i gave in and and took a two hour nap this afternoon, and then went to bed at around 9:30. i woke up thinking it was 3 or 4am. it was midnight, and i haven't been able to sleep since.

so here is my flight story:

-when i originally booked my flight, our travel agent booked me on united. i asked them if that was the cheapest option available and they said yes.
-i didn't believe them, so i went onto our travel website and found a cheaper flight through ANA. i had never heard of the airline, but because i'm a good employee, i called up the travel agent and asked them to book me on that flight b/c it was a couple hundred dollars cheaper.
-i arrive at the narita airport - the check-in lady at the counter was super nice. i asked her how much it would cost to upgrade my seat, and found out that the travel agent had already booked me on premium economy. score, no need to upgrade. i still told her about my knee and asked if there was an exit row or front row seat available for premium economy. she told me only seats available were: front row premium economy, but middle seat. a window seat. and my current seat, an aisle seat. she suggested i keep my seat as the best situation for my knee.
-i go to the ANA lounge since they let anyone in premium economy and above in (unlike EVA). i get there when it's almost completely empty, before the huge rush of people, so i got a good seat. being the asian that i am, i load up on the free food and drinks. :)
-i leave the lounge about 10 minutes before my boarding time.
-i stand around for about 5 minutes before i notice my name plastered on their monitor telling me to see an airline personnel. i start thinking to myself what i possibly could have done wrong - did i get there too late? were you supposed to check in at the gate? i'd never done that before.
-i go to the counter and discovered i wasn't in trouble... they had actually upgraded me to business class for free!

i couldn't stop thanking God. here i was, thinking i was going to have a miserable flight home, in regular economy with cramped quarters and a matching cramped knee. instead i somehow end up in business class... with a lie-flat seat and a complete pain-free flight home. ANA was an awesome airline - not just b/c i was in business class, but overall a great airline to fly with. food was great, entertainment was great - it basically is everything i thought EVA would be but was not (EVA was highly disappointing to fly with, probably because the planes they use for the sfo-tpe flights are really old and outdated. plus the food was horrible.)

pics of my first meal on the flight:

and for dessert, green tea parfait (which was delicious!):

sometimes... it pays to try to save your company money. :) but mostly, i'm so thankful that my flight home was a much better experience. besides the flight over, my knee held up relatively well - it still doesn't do well walking long distances, but in general, i didn't have to walk a ton during my trip. thanks so much to everyone who prayed for me!

oh man, i'm going to eat it at work tomorrow (er, today). i tried to sleep but i just can't.

Awesome story.

You get free food in the ANA lounge (Air Nippon Airways ... vs JAL - Japan Air Lines; not sure which is the 'national' airline)!!

Wow that food looked really good!
